I noticed in the drag race, that from many angles the 6MPS looked to be storming away with it, but then the Vectra suddenly won. I guess the Vectra has a big turbo 'step' and the real power comes in higher up the range, unlike the MPS which is gutsy from low down, followed by the additional boost of the turbo from 2,800.

Not according to the Vectra spec. Although I've seen hp quoted as 251 and 255 so I'm not sure how accurate anything else is. Max torque is supposedly between 1800 and 5500.

I had assumed that the Vectra had more hp than the Mazda but it has slightly less. How it gets to the chequered flag in front of the Mazda may be down to weight. The 6 MPS can get out of the blocks faster because the rear wheels are driven.

However, the stunt was staged to underline the assertion that it was the 4th fastest saloon (or summat like that) so it had to win the drag race. That's one of the problems with Top Gear.

Bit of a ressurection here, but I can't resist discussing a race!

According to autocar's 2006 0-100-0mph test, the 6 MPS is a LOT quicker than the Vectra VXR.

0-30mph 0-60mph 0-100mph
1.87 5.98 15.51
2.71 6.94 17.23

There's no way the VXR would ever catch it after a beating liek tha. From a roll it isn't even faster, typical Top Gear; don't let the truth get in the way of a bit of sensationalism... Great review of the 6 MPS though!
